Who's is your XFL team?
Awee shit, here we go again! Another year of a football league trying to grab our attention right after the Super Bowl. This time, there is money behind the league and should be able to pay their players on time. I am looking at you AAFL! This is year it is the XFL, well version 2 of it. This time they are looking to capture your attention by showing you great collegiate players who didn’t make it in the NFL. The most high-profile player in the league has to be Cardale Jones. National Championship winner, former 4th round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills and hopefully someone who can complete a deep ball to make these games interesting.
Wait hold on…after a quick glance of the rosters, man, these rosters are terrible. That’s not the point though, the point is the XFL hopes you will forget that these players, in the most part can’t play and hope the tricks and gimmicks will get you to stay on the channel. I do like some of the ideas that they have put into place. Allowing the offense to throw the ball twice before you cross the line of scrimmage and making the receivers only keep one foot inbounds. It’s just easier and keeps more plays for the offense and should in turn, allow the offense to score more points.
The XFL is trying to be a step above college football and not a competitor to the NFL. People who claim to like college football more than the NFL, should in theory be watching this more than NFL fans. You get to continue to see players who hold a nice place in your heart from when they played on Saturdays. No one In this league has NFL highlights to speak of and if they did, they would be in the NFL still. The hardcore college football fan who remembers Keenan Reynolds play for Navy or remember Tyree Jackson from Buffalo go through the draft process will be the target audience.
The real question is will you watch? Will you get invested enough to have a team to rout for and eventually purchase merch for? As a fan of football overall, I will watch to see how the teams play, see some of the gimmicks that the league has to offer and if my team the DC Defenders win, maybe I will come back next week.
