Toronto FC v San Jose

The Reds opened the 2020 season with 1 point and that’s a damn shame. Toronto outplayed San Jose in almost every statistically way except in the score column.  The San Jose goal in the 90’ +6 reminds many fans of last year as the team could not hold leads and would routinely leave matches without 3 points.  Up until that literal last second goal the team had played great and some could even praise the defense for their performance.  Yet and the end of the day two mishaps, two unbelievable goals later and the club is leaving the Bay Area with only 1 point.

Even though the Reds didn’t hold much possession in the first half, it didn’t feel like they were being out played. That was evident by the numerous corners that the team took in the first frame.  Eventually the consistent pressure broke San Jose, when Jozy was talked in the box leading to a Pozuelo penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.  They take advantage of turnovers and with seconds can be on the break and that showed on the second goal of the game.  A fast break pass from Pozuelo lead to an Endoh shot that was finished off by substitute Richie Laryea.  That was one of several chances that the team had to score today and hopefully will lead to an outburst of goals in one of the upcoming games.

If the game ended 2 minutes before it was supposed to, I would be praising the team for a good defensive performance.  They had only given up one goal, off of a deflection but was still keeping San Jose from quality shots.  For the most part that is still the case even after the back-breaking goal in the last minute.  The team has a foundation that appears to be better than what was showcased last year.

Next Saturday Toronto plays NYCFC, a team who some say can come out of the Eastern Conference.  This will be a great match up early in the season and with it being the Home Opener, should be a great atmosphere. Let’s see if they can get 3 points on their home pitch
