After Hours-The Weeknd-Review

AFTER HOURS

AFTER HOURS

What’s not to love more than cocaine, sex and downright despair. According to The Weeknd, absolutely nothing.  I have always been a casual fan of his work and alway enjoy the singles that he puts out for his album.  For some odd reason the marketing for his latest album “After Hours” worked for me and I was interested in listening to this entire album. Well I listened to it midday on Tuesday the 24th and there lies my first mistake.

I tried listening to this album after leaving my parents house and the car speakers just didn’t do it for me.  I couldnt find the rhythm and every other song seemed to sound exactly the same.  I even tweeted at 5:11pm

One of my many mistakes was listening to the album while the sun was out and while I was having a pretty good day.  Two, I was listening in a car, with let’s just say not the best sound system and third and most importantly I was completely sober.  I knew that Abel would not want me to digest such a work of art with those particular factors and decided that I would give it another chance at some point.  Then came Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

My girlfriend decided to be responsible and hit the bed at around 11pm while not finishing her glass of wine.  I on the other hand, was full of energy, just knocked down my second glass and was at nowhere near my limit.  I started to do what any other responsible man would do in that situation and decided to play Xbox.  As I was getting my ass kicked in Mortal Kombat 11 online I decided to pop in the Air Pods Pro, swing them into noise cancellation mode and once again listen to the new Weeknd. Boy did that change things!

I was suddenly immersed into a pit of sadness from my early years as a young pup looking for tail around the University at Buffalo North and South campuses.  I kept pouring glass after glass of wine until it was empty and by the end of the album felt like I could conquer any and everything.  All while during the album feeling like I was going through withdrawals from drugs I clearly have never taken.

Each segment of songs gives you a different feeling from sadness from being single to reminding oneself that you can do any and every one to realizing you are in denial of it all after.  I thoroughly enjoyed the album but will never listen to this from start to finish ever again because I don’t want those feelings again.  To think that this man is able to consistently make music after all the cocaine use, is a testament to that mans soul.  I give this a 5 out of 5! Go listen bitches!
